Delivers the following judgment, which was adopted on that date:

PROCEDURE

1. The case originated in an application (no. 22490/05) against the Russian Federation lodged with the Court under Article 34 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (“the Convention”) by a Russian national, Ms Marina Yuryevna Alekseyeva (“the applicant”), on 31 May 2005.

2. The applicant was represented by Mr A. Yakovenko, a lawyer practising in Moscow. The Russian Government (“the Government”) were represented by their Agent, Mr G. Matyushkin, the Representative of the Russian Federation at the European Court of Human Rights.

3. The applicant alleged that the investigation into her son’s death during his military service had not been effective.

4. On 26 March 2010 the application was communicated to the Government.

5. The applicant was born in 1960 and lives in Norilsk.

A. Death of the applicant’s son

6. On 1 August 2002 the applicant’s son, Georgiy Alekseyev, became a student at the Irkutsk Military College of Aviation Engineering (Иркутский военный авиационный инженерный институт – “the College”). Studies formed part of his military service, and the applicant’s son served as a private.
